How it works

Three questions first, the variety second

A birthday bouquet is chosen by the person, the place and the time, not by the calendar. So before the variety, answer three questions: who the birthday person is, where they will be during the day, and what else is happening that day. The answers decide the number of stems, the colour and the delivery window.

The place matters more than it seems. At home there is a vase and water; in an office there is often only a glass jar or a tumbler; on a restaurant table the bouquet shares space with plates and other guests’ gifts. If the birthday person will carry the bouquet home on the metro or a bus, a smaller, lighter one is easier; for an evening at home a more generous one fits.

The third is time. The birthday person’s phone keeps ringing, guests arrive, the table is laid. A bouquet that turns up in the morning still has time to stand in water before the party, while one that appears in the middle of dinner becomes one more chore. So choose a delivery window for a time when the person is definitely in and can put the flowers in a vase without rushing.

How many stems: by budget and by occasion

The price per stem does not change with the number of stems in the bouquet, so the difference between options is simple arithmetic and the occasion makes the choice. By a common tradition the number is odd. Each variety’s page shows how many stems it is sold from. Rough guides for a bouquet of one variety:

  • 15 stems

    15

For work, a visit and the journey home

Easy to hold in one hand, and it fits an ordinary vase or a tall jar. A good size for a colleague or an acquaintance, for a visit, and for anyone who will carry it home on public transport.

  • 25 stems

    25

The main choice for someone close

A full bouquet that can be seen from the doorway. For a mother, a friend, a wife or a sister it is a size that will not get lost among other gifts. It needs a roomy vase with a wide neck.

When the birthday is an event

For a round date, for someone very dear to you, or when the bouquet comes from many people. It is almost part of the furniture: you will need a bucket or a large vase and plenty of water. Think ahead about how the birthday person will get it home.

Etiquette: which bouquet for whom

A short guide to what usually works for different people. Which varieties are available today is shown in the catalogue.

A colleague
A bouquet for a colleague has to travel home easily: small, and free of showy romance — red roses at work read differently from what you meant. If the whole department is chipping in, one bouquet with a card that names everyone beats several separate ones.
A manager
A restrained bouquet and a short card. A huge armful in front of the whole office embarrasses a person; chrysanthemums or pale roses, if they are in stock, look appropriate.
A mother or a grandmother
On her birthday there will most likely be guests, so the bouquet will stand in plain view next to the table. Chrysanthemums suit that: they last 10–14 days in a vase, and their light scent will not compete with the food. If your mother loves roses, choose them despite the shorter span: what she loves matters more than what lasts.
A friend
You can be bolder here: sunflowers, if they are in stock, or roses in a rich shade. For a friend 25 stems is generous without being ceremonial, and the card can be playful, with a joke only the two of you will get.
A wife or a girlfriend
Memory matters more than size here: the variety she once called her favourite says more than the number of stems. If you do not know, go for roses in a colour you often see her wearing.
A man or a male friend
Men are given flowers less often, so they remember them. Sunflowers or chrysanthemums look simple and natural, and 15 stems will not take up half the table.
Yourself
A bouquet on your own birthday is a perfectly normal and pleasant gesture. Order it for the morning so the day starts with flowers, and choose what you love, not what is “expected”.

Colour and variety when you do not know their taste

When you do not know their taste, the easiest choice is a restrained colour. Each of our bouquets is a single variety, so it looks composed, does not argue with the interior and does not ask the person to know anything about floristry. Which shades are in the warehouse depends on the latest supply, so the catalogue shows today’s.

It is easier to choose a colour by the person than by fashion. Calm light shades suit almost everyone; rich ones suit people who like bright things. Red usually reads as romance, yellow and orange as summer and good spirits. A folk belief holds that yellow flowers foretell a parting; many people do not mind, but if the birthday person takes such beliefs seriously, choose another colour.

Vase life is part of the choice too. Chrysanthemums last 10–14 days, roses 5–7, sunflowers 5–10. If the birthday person is about to leave town, the more durable chrysanthemums make more sense: they last longer. Chrysanthemums have a light herbal scent, so for someone sensitive to smells they are a calm choice.

Birthday delivery: from order to front door

The date is already fixed, so the main thing is to hit the right delivery window. The steps, in order:

  1. Find out where and when to reach them

Where will the birthday person be that day: at home, at the office or on the road? For an office, note the floor, the room or department and the name, so the courier does not search for the right door at random.

  2. Order a week ahead, or phone earlier

Online ordering opens 7 days before the delivery date. If the birthday is further off and you want to reserve the flowers now, call us. You choose the variety and the number of stems yourself, and the delivery window at checkout.

  3. Look at the photo before dispatch

Before dispatch we send a photo of the bouquet. This way you see the colour and the size before delivery and can show the picture to colleagues or relatives who chipped in, so everyone knows what is on its way.

  4. Leave a number that will be answered

Delivery across Kyiv takes 2–3 hours, and the courier phones before arriving. Leave the number of the person who will meet the courier; for a surprise it should be someone from the birthday person’s circle, not the birthday person.

What to write on the card

We add a handwritten card free of charge, and you write the text in the order comment. Name the person and add one concrete detail — that is enough. A few examples to start from:

  • “Happy birthday! Thank you for being there at work: any Monday is easier with you.”
  • “Mum, happy birthday! Thank you for always believing in me.”
  • “Olena, happy birthday! May this year be the one you wish for.”
  • “My love, happy birthday. Thank you for every one of our days — and for this one too.”
  • “Happy birthday from the whole department. We wish you calm days and pleasant surprises.”
  • “Happy birthday, my friend! The next coffee is on me.”
  • “Happy birthday to you — just because you are you.”

Questions and answers

How many stems should I choose for a birthday?

For a colleague or an acquaintance 15 stems is usually enough, for a mother, a friend or a wife 25, for a round date or someone very close 51. By a common tradition the number is odd. Each variety’s page shows how many stems it is sold from.

What should I give if I do not know their taste?

A calm colour: roses or chrysanthemums, if they are in stock. A bouquet of one variety looks composed and needs neither a special vase nor any knowledge of floristry. Before dispatch we send a photo, so you see the colour and the size before it is delivered.

When should I order flowers for a birthday?

The simplest time is the week before the birthday: that is when online ordering opens, and you choose the delivery window at checkout. If the birthday is further off and you want to reserve the flowers now, call us.

Can I have flowers delivered to an office, or as a surprise?

Yes. Give the address, the floor and the name, and pick a window for a time when the person is definitely in. The courier phones before arriving, so for a surprise leave the number of someone who will be with the birthday person and can step out to meet the courier.

Do you add a card, and will I see the bouquet before it is sent?

Yes, we add a handwritten card free of charge, and you write the text in the order comment. We send a photo of the finished bouquet before dispatch, so you can see what the birthday person will get and, if needed, show it to those who chipped in.

How long will the flowers last, and what should I do after the party?

Chrysanthemums last 10–14 days in a vase, roses 5–7, sunflowers 5–10. To help the bouquet last its full span, cut the stems at an angle, use clean water and change it every day or two, and keep the vase away from radiators and direct sun.
